Nairobbery

I arrived in Nairobi this afternoon. Initial impressions:
  • Taxis are really expensive
  • This city is more spread out than Kampala
  • The plains surrounding the airport are totally stereotypically Kenya -- broad expanses of scrub and bushes with periodic lone trees rising in different spots
  • Nairobi has a lot of crime. There are security guards everywhere, but unlike Kampala none of them are armed.
  • The roads are really good.
  • The hotel (Kenya Comfort Hotel) has a lot of security and a working elevator, but the rooms are small and expensive. The people are nice.
  • I picked up open wireless in my hotel and it's the best internet I've had since arriving in Africa.
  • The TV doesn't have CNN. Yay.
  • Gas is cheap compared with Uganda. My taxi driver tells me it's because Uganda has no refineries, so they have to import fuel from Kenya.
  • Haven't seen any lions yet.
Everything's closed today, but I'll tour a bit tomorrow.

You might want to read about my second day in Nairobi.
