I ate goat last night, does that count?

Today is the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the day that God told Abraham to sacrifice his son. Abraham was willing to do so despite the Devil's temptations, runs the story, but at the last moment God stopped him and told him to sacrifice a lamb instead. Today, many Muslims sacrifice lambs or goats. Islam teaches that it was Ishmael who was to be sacrificed, while Judaism (and thus Christianity) says it was Isaac.

Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar (like the Jewish one), whereas the Gregorian calendar is a solar one, the days don't quite line up perfectly. That means it's sometimes difficult to determine the day on which an Islamic holiday will fall. On Friday, we received an email saying "Monday might be Eid. We're not sure." They calculate it in advance, but apparently there are astronomers in Saudi Arabia who make official measurements of the moon's crescent and sometimes have to adjust the holiday. Of the last four years, the holiday was moved to a new date at the last minute three times.

Anyway, I'm at work because it's my last week and I have tons to do, but the office is almost empty and the roads were just about deserted. I think just because there's anti-Muslim sentiment in Kampala doesn't mean they won't take the holiday. (Isn't there a stand-up comedian with a routine about how KKK members still take off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day?)
