Last night a friend and I went to Ange Noir, one of the more infamous clubs in Kampala. It's mostly locals -- there were only two or three other mzungu. We got there early and the place was relatively empty, though it filled up fast. It was more or less what I expected -- black lights, loud thumpy music, bars all around. Smaller than I expected, though, and brighter. No smoking, which was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, they weren't playing dance music. We tried to dance anyway, as did the other patrons -- and I emphasize "tried", because there was really nothing that resembled dancing happening at this place. Just a lot of people standing around swaying awkwardly to an awful slowed-down remix of Toto's Africa (really). And some Snoop Dogg. Oh well. For unknown reasons a lot of people were standing in front of mirrors while they "danced". I guess it's sort of like having a partner. There was an upstairs part with a much higher cover, but we didn't see anything that made it worthwhile.
One fun thing about living where there's no infrastructure is that you get surprises all the time. Like, this morning, we discovered that all the food in the fridge was warm. There must have been a long power outage, I guess at least from yesterday afternoon through this morning.
